The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
