Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
