A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
